What to expect

Hogan Lovells is looking for graduates whose combination of academic excellence and desire for specialist knowledge will contribute to developing the business and taking it forward. Although being one of the largest global legal practices, the firm works in small, hard-working teams where everybody is committed to its collective success.

As a consequence of the high profile, demanding work the firm does, it expects its applicants to show a track record of attainment with excellent academic results from GCSE (or equivalent) onwards. Candidates should be aiming to achieve, or have achieved, at least a good 2:1 (or equivalent) consistently, throughout their studies and as their final degree classification.

The personal qualities its people possess are as important as their qualifications. You need to be:

    Hogan Lovells make no apologies for describing its training and development programmes as 'world class' and its attribution seems to be well justified. From trainees to partners, it enables the brightest minds to continually add new forms of technical and business expertise to their existing knowledge and skills.

    There are three training schemes as part of Hogan Lovells' development programmes:

    Legal Practice Course - A mandatory, enhanced and accelerated LPC course tailored to the requirements of City firms.
    Pre-qualification: Training Contract - A two-year training contract split into four six-month periods, or 'seats'.
    Post-qualification - Ongoing training and development focused on advanced legal skills, business and management skills, and specialist practice expertise.

    These schemes involve a mixture of hard studying as well as human interaction. Through its mentoring support system, Hogan Lovells will give you access to a partner with who you can discuss your career progress and any issues. You will also have the ongoing support of fellow trainees and colleagues.

    What does the future hold?

    The success of your career is what you make it. Hogan Lovells is known to produce future Senior Associates and Partners from its trainees.

    I started with the firm as a trainee in 2002, having attended a summer vacation scheme which convinced me to apply. My training contract involved seats in construction, product liability litigation and a client secondment at the internet bank, Egg, as well as financial institutions where I subsequently qualified into the commercial and retail banking team. I became a senior associate in 2008, of counsel in 2012 and partner in 2013.
