Your Career

What to expect

With over 5,000 people working in 42 major financial centres in 29 countries, and more than half of these outside the UK, Allen & Overy is a truly global firm. Allen & Overy lawyers come from all five continents and bring with them a wealth of experience, perspectives and languages and regularly meet to share knowledge and train together.

Your training will be a combination of three and six month rotations (known as 'seats') where you will sit with a partner or associate. Soon after you start your training contract you'll meet with the HR Manager for Trainees, to create a 'seat' plan tailored to your interests. There will be opportunities to explore the possibilities of international or client secondments.

You will also nominate a "priority seat" which should ensure you'll gain experience in that department. You will spend at least twelve months of your training contract gaining experience in at least two of Allen & Overy's core practice areas: Banking, Corporate and International Capital Markets.

In addition

  • You'll gain contentious experience in the Litigation department.
  • alongside the day-to-day work, trainees are encouraged to get involved in a number of pro bono iniatives such as:
    • giving free legal advice at the Battersea Legal Advice Centre evening surgery
    • working for human rights organisations such as INTERIGHTS, Reprieve and Advocates for International Development

  • Your training contracts will last two years.
  • As a non-law graduate your training contract will be the same, but your route to qualification will first include study for the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL).
  • Following completion of a law degree, you will study an accelerated LPC at the College of Law in London, lasting six and a half months.
  • You will have opportunities to undertake international and client secondments during the second year of training.
  • You'll have the option of completing a Litigation course to gain contentious experience, consisting of five days' tuition and regular visits to a legal advice centre.

What does the future hold

Allen & Overy wants you to succeed and develop a long-term career with them. Retention rates on qualification - on average 72% - reflect this. In your second year as a trainee your salary will increase to £44,000 and upon qualification you'll receive £61,500. Usually Allen & Overy associates will have been with the firm as associates for six or seven years before being considered for partnership.
