Your Career

What to expect

  1. Experience up to eight areas of law

By offering three months in a seat rather than six, Freshfields gives trainees more choice.

One of the benefits of a training contract with Freshfields (according to every trainee intake) is that it allows you to experience up to eight seats. The norm at most firms is four. This means that your training is as broad as possible - important as your career develops. It helps you to see a deal or a problem from several points of view and to understand the work done by colleagues in other practice areas.

As you move through the training contract, the trainee development team supports you in deciding which seats are best for you. If you only want to do four seats, you can, but most trainees take advantage of the chance to do more. But however many seats you choose, in two years you'll cover a range of industries and practice areas, build your business knowledge and find a field in which you'd like to qualify.

  2. The choice is wide: 13 specialist teams, pro bono clients and 85 secondments

Each lawyer works in one of seven practice groups, similar to other international law firms:

    • Antitrust, competition and trade
    • Corporate
    • Dispute resolution
    • Employment, pensions and benefit
    • Finance
    • Real estate
    • Tax

But some of the larger practice groups are divided into teams.

  3. Expect to be stretched

It's a steep learning curve, but you'll have all the support you need.

At Freshfields you learn through formal training sessions and by sitting with a qualified lawyer who is partly responsible for giving you work and monitoring your progress. Just when you feel you're on top of a task, your supervisor will give you a new role, new tasks, and new responsibilities. If you're feeling too comfortable, you're not learning enough.

  4. Every day, every evening, there's something going on

The sports and social activities allow you to relax, have fun and get to know people across the office.

Sports opportunities include football, cricket, hockey, rugby, netball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, cycling, skiing and sailing. Freshfields' teams compete at all levels - against other offices, other firms and clients, and many teams go on local and foreign tours.

For those who can at least hold a note, there's the Freshfields choir that sings at lunchtimes in a nearby church. It also has a music room where you can take lessons or just get in some practice, and for those after a jamming session, there is the London office band, Fleetstreet Mac.
